Australian Open men’s singles final
Who: Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal
When: Sunday 27 January
Where: Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Park
Estimated start time: 8.30am (GMT)

After the disappointment of the two-time defending champion Roger Federer’s early exit that took away the potential high-voltage Federer-Nadal clash in the semis, the 2019 Australian Open has thrown up a dream men’s final between the top two ranked players in the world, at the height of their powers.

For both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, this match could potentially go a long way in their quest for ultimate greatness. If Nadal wins this final, he will be the only player in the open era to win each grand slam at least a couple of times.

Though he has already won each of the other three slams at least twice, this is the only one that has eluded him so far.

On the evidence of the stupendous form he has shown so far, this could be his best chance yet to achieve that goal, something that has eluded his two great rivals- Federer and Djokovic.

Moreover, this will take his tally of grand slam singles titles to eighteen, just two shy of Federer, and he would be then in a great position to take it to nineteen at the French Open, where he will anyway be the favourite to lift an unprecedented twelfth title, regardless of what happens in the final here.

Nadal’s demolition of the young Tsitsipas in the semis, and before that, his one-sided victory over a hapless Tomas Berdych in the fourth round has showcased Nadal’s best form in the hard courts.

With a remodeled serve and an aggressive game, he looks unbeatable, well, almost. The only player who could potentially challenge this new Nadal is the world number one, Novak Djokovic. And that is whom he will face in a block-buster summit clash.

Just like Rafael Nadal, a lot is at stake for the Serbian here in the final of the Australian Open. If the French Open and the Wimbledon have been happy hunting grounds for Nadal and Federer respectively, the Australian Open is the closest to being Djokovic’s fort.

For the world number one, losing here to Nadal would be akin to Nadal being defeated by him in the French Open final. He would certainly not like that to happen at his favorite slam, which also happens to be Nadal’s least successful slam.

The head to head record between them is quite even, with Djokovic edging it 27-25. So, there is nothing much to read over there.

In grand slam finals, they have met seven times prior to this one, with Nadal winning four of those. The only time they have met at the Australian Open final was in 2012, which went to five sets and is considered one of the best slam finals in the history of the game.

Their most recent match was in last year’s Wimbledon semi-final, which was again a closely-contested five-setter that Djokovic narrowly edged.

It will not all be surprising if this match too goes into a fifth set. Djokovic’s form before the semi-final here was certainly not as good as Nadal’s, but the determination and ruthlessness that he showed in his semi-final match against Lucas Pouille has certainly ensured that both the players go into the final in irresistible form and with abundance of confidence.

It will be hard to call the match one way or the other. But the resurgent Rafael Nadal, with a remodeled serve and producing possibly the best hard court tennis of his career, may just have a slight edge.

Prediction: Rafael Nadal to win in five sets

Australian Open 2019: Sharma and Smith Stun Melichar and Soares in Mixed Doubles Semis

The Australian wild card mixed doubles pair of Astra Sharma and John-Patrick Smith reach the finals of the Australian Open 2019 by knocking down the second-seeded pairing of American Nicole Melichar and Brazilian Bruno Soares 6-4 7-6 (5) in the mixed doubles semifinals.

The 23-year-old from Perth, Sharma was ranked 974 in WTA singles rankings while she was wrapping up her 2016 tennis season. In two years of time, she reached the top 250 WTA ranking in tennis. This year she qualified and sealed a spot for herself in the main draw of the Australian Open 2019. She played some enthralling matches in the qualifiers where she defeated the former World Number two Vera Zvonareva. In the first round, she surpassed her compatriot, Priscilla Hon. However, she surrendered to the Greek women, Maria Sakkari in the second round of the Melbourne major.

Nevertheless, the hopes for the premier Slam title are still alive for the Singapore-born, Sharma. Her partner, Smith and herself will be taking on the pair of Czech Barbora Krejcikova and American Rajeev Ram on Saturday in their maiden Grand Slam final on the Rod Laver Arena. “It’s all unreal,” she said, “I actually can’t think right now. Going out to the court, you see all those lighted-up panels and it’s intimidating. I was shaking in my boots. I’m speechless really. I can’t really believe the situation we’re in. Coming into this I had zero expectation and now I’m absolutely over the moon.”

Sharma and Smith barely knew each other before teaming up of the Melbourne major, but however, their team has triumphed over multiple major winners Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray earlier in the last eight round. Besides Sharma’s victory in her home country, the women’s doubles champion team, Zhang Shuai and Samantha Stosur feature an Australian. Also, John Peers an Australian tennis player who is partnering Henri Kontinen is into the finals of the men’s doubles event and they will play the French duo Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut on Sunday.

Australian Open 2019, Women’s Final: Naomi Osaka vs Petra Kvitova, Preview and Prediction

The Australian Open 2019 women’s final is set to witness an exciting clash between two grand slam champions – the veteran Petra Kvitova, and the rising star from the country of the rising sun, Naomi Osaka.

Both have had contrasting runs to the summit clash. For Kvitova, the journey has been a fairly smooth one. She has not even lost a set so far in the tournament. In fact, the closest someone has come to taking a set off her happened only at the semi-final stage where Danielle Collins took the first set to a tie-break.

But after winning the tie-break, Kvitova simply bulldozed her way through to the final by handing a bagel to Collins in the second set.

As she described after her quarter final-match, it is her ‘second career’ after the unfortunate knife attack derailed her for a lengthy period. On the evidence of her performances so far, this could even be better than her ‘first career’, where she had won two Wimbledon titles.

Here, she has an opportunity to not only win her first Australian Open title, but also become world number one for the first time in her career.

In the year’s first grand slam, she has been serving exceptionally well. Though she was broken early in the first set against Collins, she not only broke back, but rarely looked in danger of losing her serve after that.

In the semi-final, she not only had impressive first serve win percentage, but her second serve win percentage too was at a high 72. Her opponent in the final, Naomi Osaka, too has the reputation of a big server, with hard groundstrokes.

Though Osaka’s groundstrokes have been quite good, it is her serve that has strangely let her down many a time during the tournament. She has been broken thirteen times in the tournament so far and as a result, she has not had a smooth run to the final.

Unlike Kvitova, Osaka has been taken to three sets in three out of her six matches so far, including her semi-final clash against Karolina Pliskova. But her big match temperament and calmness under pressure has seen her through tough phases so far.

After losing the second set to Pliskova, she kept her calm and trusted her game to pull off another impressive three-set victory to end a ten-match winning streak of the Czech player, who ironically had done the same to the Japanese player at the Pan Pacific Open last year.

But after getting past one Czech player, she runs into another one, who has been in simply irresistible form in this tournament. To get it past the in-form Kvitova, Osaka will need to improve her serve.

There is a huge contrast between her first and second serve, in terms of speed and impact. Against Pliskova, she won a meager 43% of her second serves. She cannot afford to do that against Kvitova who is a better returner than Pliskova.

As she has shown in her short career so far, especially in that now-famous 2018 US Open final against Serena Williams, she has the game and the temperament to get past more established players on the biggest of stages.

But she will need to raise her performance to have a chance in the final this time, against the most dominant player of the tournament so far.

Prediction: Petra Kvitova to win in three Sets

Alex De Minaur vs Rafa Nadal live streaming: Australian Open preview
The first Grand Slam of the year is upon us! And, the 2019 edition of the Australian Open promises to be an absolute belter!

This is one of the most fascinating matches of the week as Australian Alex De Minaur takes on Spanish tennis legend Rafa Nadal.

De Minaur enjoyed an impressive 2018 and is seeded 27 for the Australian Open 2019.

Rafa Nadal meanwhile, is seeded number two here and has looked in great shape so far.

Alex De Minaur and Rafa Nadal have met just once before on the ATP Tour and that was at another Grand Slam: Wimbledon 2018.

Nadal eased to the win in the round of 32 at Wimbledon in straight sets. The end result, was 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

In front of a raucous home crowd, it would not be a huge surprise if De Minaur does a lot better against Nadal this time.

Match: Novak Djokovic vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Competition: Australian Open 2019

Stage: Round of 64

Date: Thursday, January 17, 2019

Start time: 09:30 (UK time)

Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Mitchell Krueger that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 85 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 78 percent of his total service points and produced six breaks on 20 break points. Djokovic was in control of the match from start to finish, but he could improve his second serve percentage and did have 26 unforced errors in two errors. While improvement is needed, Djokovic is still the clear cut favorite to win this tournament when it’s all said and done. Djokovic has been bounced before the third round of a grand slam just once since 2009. Djokovic has won 11 of his last 12 matches on hard court.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming off a straight sets win over Martin Klizan that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Tsonga won 94 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Tsonga won 79 percent of his total service points and didn’t face a single break point while hitting 23 aces. Tsonga is still fresh off a knee injury and has limited reps under his belt, but you combine his first round performance with his semifinal appearance in Brisbane, and the Frenchman looks impressive. As long as Tsonga continues to serve this way and hit with extreme power, he’s a dangerous, dangerous second round opponent. Tsonga has been bounced before the third round of a grand slam just twice in his last 16 appearances. Tsonga has won four of his last five matches on hard court.

These two have played 25 times and Djokovic has won 18 of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2016 US Open, a match Djokovic won in two sets. Tsonga’s last win over Djokovic came in a 2014 exhibition match, which was just one set. Each of the last 13 meetings between these players were decided in straight sets.

This is a hell of a second round match, and as long as Tsonga’s conditioning holds up, he’s more than capable of making this match very interesting. Tsonga is hitting the ball with great pace, is serving at a very high level and hasn’t lost before the third round of the Australian Open since 2007, his first ever appearance at this tournament. The question is conditioning, as Tsonga is still working his way back from injury and doesn’t have a ton of matches stashed away. Djokovic still deserves to be the favorite and he’s the safe pick, however, this is going to be highly competitive.

I’ll take Djokovic in four tight sets, and consider the over once the line is released. I also wouldn't talk you out of it if you wanted to sprinkle something on Tsonga as a big underdog. He's serving well enough to give Djokovic a run for his money.
